Greenstein is a close personal friend and mentor to Phil Ivey. He was the player who introduced Ivey to the "Big Game" held in Bobby's Room at The Bellagio in Las Vegas. Ivey says that he was so inspired by Barry's lifestyle in Las Vegas that it made him focus on becoming the best player that he could be so that he could create a similar lifestyle for himself!
Barry Greenstein has two children and four stepchildren. He runs a poker training and entertainment website called PokerRoad.com with his stepson, Joe Sebok, who is also a poker pro.
Greenstein is known and regularly teased for his apparent preference for Asian women. He famously taught his former girlfriend Mimi Tran how to play poker in exchange for her teaching him how to speak Vietnamese.
In 2005, Barry wrote the poker classic, "Ace on the River: An Advanced Poker Guide". Doyle Brunson read it and described the text as being "like candy to a poker player." Greenstein often gives a signed copy of his book to the player that knocks him out of a tournament, and he includes the details of the winning hand as a momento.
Mr Greenstein is a popular and regular guest on TV poker shows including, "High Stakes Poker" and "Poker After Dark" where his warmth and skilful, methodical style of play make him one of the most respected players amongst both his opponents and the viewing audience.
