Sheringham has cashed in two previous EPT events, his best finish being 49th at last year's EPT London

Former football star Teddy Sheringham is on course for his best ever live poker result at the European Poker Tour (EPT) even in Vilamoura.

The ex-Spurs and Manchester United striker lies in 15th position overall in Portugal's biggest ever tournament, which boasts a first prize of €467,835.

Sheringham, who is an ambassador for EPT sponsor Pokerstars, returns for Day 4 today with 381,000 chips.

He set up his huge stack yesterday when he made a full house versus William Thorson, not long after he had texted a mutual friend of theirs that he planned to take the Swede's chips. That pot crippled Thorson who went on to finish in 26th place pocketing €9,312.

Sheringham has cashed in two previous EPT events, his best finish being 49th at last year's EPT London, where he walked away with £11,600.

His biggest ever win was £40,481 at the World Series of Poker Europe event, also in London, last year, although a final table finish here would eclipse that.

Online qualifier Martin Jacobson continues to dominate the EPT Vilamoura as the €5,300 Main Event goes into Day 4 with just 24 players left.

Jacobson was rarely out of the top spot on Day 3 and now has 1,362,000. The talented Swede has a string of great results to his name including third place at EPT Budapest, runner-up at WPT Venice last year and a fourth place finish in the World Series $1,500 side event this summer. His live tournament winnings now come close to $1 million.

Rob Hollink, the first ever EPT Grand Final winner, spent Day 3 steadily building his stack and now lies in fifth place with 696,000. He is the last remaining EPT champion in the field.

A total of 384 players entered EPT Vilamoura creating a €1.8 million prize pool.
