THE winner of the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event will pocket a staggering $8,944,138, it was confirmed today.
As Day 1D came to a close at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, WSOP organisers confirmed this is now the second biggest event in poker history.
Some 7,319 players entered the $10,000 buy-in tournament, 5,146 of whom survive.
That means the net prize pool is a mouthwatering $68,798,600 with the first 747 places paid.
The figures had everyone salivating at the end of Day 1D, after which Corwin Cole – a local Las Vegas player – was the overall chip leader heading into Day 2.
As ever, the final opening day attracted a final rush of entrants with 2,391 latecomers starting. That crucial figure means the only the 2006 WSOP Main Event, which had 8,733 players, has ever been bigger than the monster now underway.
The end of Day 1D chip leader is one-time bracelet winner Steve Billirakis. He won his only WSOP victory at the age of 21 – at the time making him the youngest WSOP champ in history.
That record was set in 2007 but broken a few months later by Annette Obrestad, when she won the WSOP Europe championship.
The World Series of Poker Main Event continues until July 17th when the final table players to return later in the year – the 'November Nine' - will be determined.
