Australia’s Tony Hachem pocketed more than £80,000 (AUD$132,750) when he beat 221 rivals to win the Main Event in the Pokerstars Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour Perth today.

Fresh from his final table and seventh place at the last ANZPT tour event in Adelaide, Hachem – the little brother of 2005 WSOP champion Joe – won the title after beating another local boy, Aleks Lackovic, in a short heads-up clash.

It means Hachem, the 2009 ANZPT Player of the Year, now has career earnings of $319,171…or £7.015million ($10,537,045) to go before he catches up with his big bro. Even in victory, it seems, life can suck.

Just 10 hands into the showdown, Lackovic announced all-in and Hachem called to find his jacks looking good against his rival’s Ace, King of diamonds. An anonymous-looking flop was followed by rags on the turn and river – and Hachem’s long wait for a tournament victory was over.

Speaking after his win, just hours before jetting off to Manila for the APPT Manila, he said: “I am so over the moon, winning this means so much to me. I have come so close it is fantastic to finally have a title to my name.”

They can obviously play a bit of poker in Perth – seven of the nine players on the final table came from the hometown, which led to huge crowds and typically enthusiastic Australian  support from the rails.

Lackovic, who bizarrely also has a famous brother – former basketball star and Perth Wildcat Nik Lackovic -had been chip leader at the start of day but had to settle for £51,000 (AUD$84,250) as runner-up.

It was the first time the ANZPT had been held in Perth and a host of big name players were knocked out early, including Emad Tahtouh, Grant Levy, Eric Assadourian, Bryan Huang, Amanda DeCesare, Billy ‘the Croc’ Argyros, Michael Pedley and Jeffrey Lisandro.
